My printer is "hp deskjet 845c". My operating system is "Windows Vista - Service Pack 2". The cartridge doesn't move when I try to print or open the printer itself. The green power light & the orange alert light are both blinking. There are no paper jams  or anything like this. Everthing's clean, without dust inside & on the cartridge. Refresh & reset doesn't work. Any  advice will be appreciated. Thankyou.

Hi craigbaker1,

What are your ink levels for each cartridge?

I would recommend reseating the ink cartridges and replacing any low inks.  Are you able to move the carriage?

You might also try a hard reset done in the following order.  To do this, unplug all cables including the power cord from the back of the printer while the printer is still turned on.  Unplug the other end of the cord from the power source.  If there is a power module on the power cord, disconnect one end and reconnect it.  After 60 seconds, plug the cord directly into a wall outlet ( not a surge protector or battery backup )  and then plug it into the back of the printer.  Are there any changes?

Also, remember a click on the Kudos star to the left is a quick "Thanks" for a helpful post.

Hi Every one,

The hard reset done in the recommended method, with the exact "60 seconds" wait for re-plugging the printer in the exact order recommended was done with out any changes happening. The cartridge does not move from side to side at all when I try to print or open the printer itself.

The error blinking alert lights never turns off wether I'm trying to print something or not. Even when I first turn it on for the day this is occurring.

Every time I try to print, the "printing status" page under the "status" column reads "printing", to start off with, than reads "deleting", before the job is deleted.

This printer was working perfectly with my previous computer, "hp pavillion 500a". My current computer is "Asus".

Any information is appreciated, thank you.

  1. What are the estimated ink levels for each cartridge?
  2. Have you reseated the ink cartridges?  Without forcing it, can you move the printhead with your hand?
  3. Can you check the inside of the printer with a flashlight to make sure there is no paper or other debris in the printer?

Hi Every one'

Each time I turn the computer on, in addition to the error blinking alert lights message, there is a noise inside the computer that sounds like something inside the computer moving, similar to the noise of the printing cartridge, moving from side to side.

When I used the torch to check the inside of the printer, on the right hand side, I can see & feel what I think is a pool of melted ink on the bottom of the right hand side, but not on the left hand side or on the paper or anywhere else.

Any advice will be appreciated, thank you.

You checked inside the printer and there is no paper stuck.

Have you checked the back of the printer by opening the access door and checking there?

What are the ink levels for each cartridge?

Even by checking with a torch by opening up the front part with a torch, & also by opening the back part, & checking inside that part  with a torch, there is no debris or paper stuck. All the paper slides in & out easily.

The question about the ink levels for each cartridge is irrivelant for this problem because the cartridges don't move at all when I try to print. Thank you for any future advice.

My thoughts were that it would be a good idea to make sure there wasn't a problem with the cartridges because the carriage might not move because of a problem with the cartridges and might be the cause of the blinking lights.  Also, if there was paper close to the carriage or stuck in the carriage, it would be easier to see if the cartridges were out.  Sometimes reseating the ink cartridges can solve problems.

I am going to link the  Quick Help Guide.  You might take a look at the Solve a Problem section to see if there are any suggestions there that you haven't tried yet.  Let me know what happens.

I bought new ink cartridges that are the same as the other cartridges befolre they stopped working. I took the tape off the cartridges & straight away put the cartridges in the printer carrier. After doling this I exactly repeated & checked & repeated everything you instructed me in timing & step. This includes the instruction through the help links you provided. However the information tells me that there is a malfunction with the printer cartiledge or carrier because when I open the printer with the printer turned on it does not automatically  move to the centre, even though the printer is turned on & has power.

The printer connection from the pc is by means a USB port. I have not yet changed my computer or operating system. The operating system is still Windows Vista Home Premium.

When I checked inside with the torch what was seen was the same as I told you before. Also the cables  & hardware were perfectly connected & the cable was perfectly covered by plastic with nothing torn.

If you disconnect the usb cable and do a Hard Reset as described in the following link, do the lights still blink with the usb disconnected?  Click Here
