I have been given an HP Desket F380 which has not been used for two years so the cartridges have dried out.  I have downloaded the latest driver and replaced the black  cartridge but am reluctant  to replace the colour one as well in case it does not work.  When requesting to print whether from say MS word or the internet I get printer off-line despite being able to scan a page to my lap top.   Please note that I have been told by the previous owner that the printer will still print if only the black cartridge is full.

Any ideas as to what to do?

With many thanks

Many thanks for your help on this.  The combination of purchasing a new cartridge and rerunning HP doctor has done the trick.  I was close to the point of chucking out the printer so your help has saved me some money.   Much appreciated.
