HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 4178 All-in-One Printer

I have tried all the solutions that I came across on the internet for this issue but nothing works, I have reset the printer several times, I have checked printer settings multiple times and it is set to A4 paper and the paper I put in the tray is also A4 but the issue persists and whenever I try to print anything "E1" error comes up and printer cannot print anything, the only time it can print anything is when I photocopy a document manually by placing a document on the scanner and pressing the photocopy button, but even that is messed up and the size of the document photocopied is the same size as a letter.

Hi @arindam171186,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When your HP Deskjet printer is stuck with an "E1" error, it typically indicates that there's a paper jam or a paper feed issue. Here are some steps you can follow to resolve this problem.

  • Check for Paper Jams: Open the printer's access door and look for any stuck paper inside the printer. Carefully remove any jammed paper, and make sure there are no small bits of paper left behind. Be gentle to avoid damaging the printer.
  • Clear Paper Path: Ensure there is no debris or foreign objects in the paper path that could be obstructing the paper feed. You may need to use a flashlight to thoroughly inspect the area.
  • Reset the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for a few minutes. Then, plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes clear error messages.
  • Reload Paper: After clearing any paper jams, reload the paper tray with fresh, undamaged paper. Ensure that the paper is properly aligned and not overfilled.
  • Check for Sensors: Look for paper sensors in the printer. These are usually small plastic arms that detect the presence of paper. Make sure they move freely and are not stuck in the wrong position.
  • Check for Ink Cartridge Issues: Sometimes, an empty or improperly installed ink cartridge can also cause errors. Check that all your ink cartridges are correctly installed and have enough ink.
  • Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers: Outdated or corrupted printer drivers can also cause errors. Visit the HP website and make sure you have the latest drivers installed for your printer model.
  • Perform a Hard Reset: This can help clear any temporary errors. To do this, turn off the printer, unplug it, and hold the power button down for at least 15 seconds. Then, plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Factory Reset (as a last resort): If none of the above steps work, you might consider doing a factory reset on your printer. However, be aware that this will erase any custom settings you have configured on your printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
