HP ENVY Photo 7855 All-in-One Printer
macOS 10.14 Mojave

My printer will only print the first page or partial page before I get a  "Filter" failed message.  The cancel message takes forever to go away.   If It try to shut down it, it takes forever.  I have trashed the driver and software and installed all new.  Unplugged, plugged, reset.  nothing seems to work.  Need help!

Hi @watermelon1234,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP ENVY Photo 7855, where it prints only partial pages and shows a "Filter failed" message, is often related to driver compatibility issues, especially with macOS. Here's what you can try to resolve the issue:

Steps to Fix "Filter Failed" Error:

Reset the Printing System:

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click (or hold down the Control key and click) on the printer list on the left.
  • Select Reset printing system.
  • Confirm the reset. This will remove all printers and reset the system.
  • Add your printer again by clicking the + button.

Download and Install HP Easy Start:  HP Easy Start

  • Go to HP's official site and download HP Easy Start for macOS.
  • This will ensure that you get the latest compatible drivers for your printer.

Reinstall HP Printer Drivers: HP Easy Start Software and Driver Downloads

  • If HP Easy Start doesn't fix the issue, try manually installing the HP drivers.
  • Go to HP Drivers for macOS Mojave.
  • Find and download the latest drivers for your HP ENVY Photo 7855.
  • After downloading, install them and restart your Mac.

Check Printer Queue Settings:

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Click on your printer and then click Open Print Queue.
  • Look for any jobs stuck in the queue or any errors. Clear the queue if needed.

Try Printing from a Different Application:

  • Test printing from a different application (such as Preview or TextEdit) to ensure it's not a specific app causing the issue.

Update macOS (if possible): HP printer setup (Mac built-in driver)

  • macOS 10.14 Mojave is a bit older now, and there may be driver compatibility issues. Consider updating to a newer version of macOS if your hardware supports it.

Try AirPrint (if supported):

  • If available, use AirPrint instead of the HP driver. To set this up, remove the printer and add it again, but this time select AirPrint as the printer driver during setup.

Check for Firmware Updates: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure your printer has the latest firmware. You can update the firmware through HP Smart or by downloading the update from the HP support site.

Additional Troubleshooting:

  • Check Printer Settings: Make sure no advanced print settings are causing the partial print (like duplex printing or specific paper sizes).
  • Use a Different USB Cable or Network Connection: If you're connected via USB, try switching to a wireless connection or vice versa to rule out any connectivity issues.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for your response.  As it turns out, i have have Sonoma 14.5 and there are no drivers that are compatible.   I had to use Air Print.  But it is working now
