Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

get an error message when I try to print, either wirelessly or by USB direct plug in. "HP9730DF (HP Officejet 6950) is in an error state" I have tried restarting the printer by powering down & unplugging for 5 minutes. I have run the troubleshooter, which states it can't find the problem, and restarting the computer. There's no paper jam, and it was working just fine after I installed all new ink cartridges a few weeks ago.

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. I came across your post and would like to assist.

I understand that you have an HP OfficeJet 6950 All-in-One Printer and it is in an error state. The issue persists when the printer is connected wirelessly and via USB. Fabulous analysis. Spectacular diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. You've done a remarkable job performing the steps.

Are you using genuine HP ink or refilled ink?

Is the printer able to make a photocopy? If yes then it indicates that the printer and ink cartridges are all fine.

I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Disconnect the power cable from the printer while the printer is still ON.
  • Disconnect any other cables if connected the printer.
  • Press and hold the printer’s power button for 15 seconds.
  • The printer should be directly connected to the wall outlet and not to a surge protector.
  • Reconnect the power cable to print and the printer should power ON by itself. If the printer doesn’t power ON then please manually power it ON.

You may remove all the ink cartridges out and check if the printer displays an error stating that the ink cartridges are absent. The insert one cartridge at a time and check for which cartridge the error comes back. The steps from this HP article can be attempted. Though these steps help in fixing print quality issues, they also come handy in resolving such error codes.

I sincerely hope this information helps. Please feel free to keep me posted. Cheers! 🙂

The issue randomly resolved itself after days of not working, but thank you for your comprehensive reply! If the issue reappears, I’ll be sure to go through those steps.
Thanks!😄
