I have had the printer come up in an error state quite a few times - so I tried unistalling and re-installing and using the HP dr. - finally worked for a few days and now it is doing the same thing. It will print sometimes but not always and if so always has the error state message. All other computers that use this wireless printer don't have this issue.

Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the case relating to the printer in an error state error message. I will be delighted to assist you here.
Superb description, brilliant troubleshooting and terrific observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂
To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this.
- Did you run any updates on this computer recently?
Meanwhile
Perform a power reset on the printer.
- Turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn on the printer.
Assign a static IP address:
First find out the printer's IP address.
- On your HP printer, press the Setup button to display setup options for the printer.
- Press the right arrow button until Network Setup appears in the LED window, and then press the OK button.
- Press the right arrow button again until the Print Network Settings option is displayed, and then press the OK button. This prints the network settings, which include the IP address, Subnet mask, and Default Gateway (the address of your network’s router).
Once you know your printer’s IP address, entering it is pretty easy. Here’s what you do:
- Run your Web browser.
- In the Web browser’s address bar, type the IP address of your printer and press Enter. Assuming you entered the right address, the HP printer control panel should appear.
- Click the Networking tab.
-
- Under IP Address Configuration, click Manual IP.
- Enter the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway in the appropriate boxes.
- Click Apply.
Restart your printer and computer, that should fix the issue.
The trick is to remain patient, Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat.
Let me know how it goes.
Cheers.
