HP ENVY 5540 all-in-one printer making horrendous loud, grinding noises at start up and right before printing. Loud as in the neighbors can hear it. It was fine when we first got it, until almost a year after purchase, far too late to return to store. Tried doing everything the online suggestions post, which by the way seems there's far too many posts about various hp printers having same loud noise issues.
Otherwise it prints everything ok, just would like to fix the noise. Anyone found a fix? I've already tried changing ink cartridges, cleaning all rollers, changing out paper, plugging into main outlet, restarting, etc.

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Forums.
I came across your post and would like to assist.
I understand that your HP ENVY 5540 All-in-One Printer makes a loud grinding noise at startup before it starts to printing. However, the printer seems to be good.
Ideally, printers do make some amount of mechanical noise but it shouldn't be this loud. I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:
NOTE: Do not repeat any steps that you have already attempted
- Disconnect the power cable from the printer while the printer is still ON.
- Disconnect any other cables if connected the printer.
- Press and hold the printer’s power button for 15 seconds.
- The printer should be directly connected to the wall outlet and not to a surge protector.
- Reconnect the power cable to print and the printer should power ON by itself. If the printer doesn’t power ON then please manually power it ON.
Also, download and install the firmware update for the printer via this link: www.123.hp.com
The printer needs to be restarted once the firmware update is successfully installed.
If the issue still persists after performing the above steps then it points towards a hardware defect with the printer. In such a case you may contact our HP phone support team to check the available service options:
