Printer hit by lightning last night. Shows hp invent logo and progress line at bottom of screen is running but printer seems dead otherwise. Progress line will run several cycles and then stop, screen will blink blank and then start with progress line again. this repeats again and again. Is printer ruined?

The printer is most likely ruined, but it might be salvagable. How was the printer damaged - was it through the power cable, or was there a telephone line connected for Fax? If the damage was from the power cable it is possible that replacing the power module will resolve the issue. I have had good results buying these items on eBay, for example see here.
If a replacement power module doe not resolve the issue the unit is probably not repairable. If you have a number of cartridges or otherwise want to keep the printer going you might find a replacement on eBay or at a thrift shop. See here for some eBay offerings.

Probably. Try this.
With the power on unplug the unit from the wall outlet. Wait 10 mins. Plug the unit back into the wall outlet not using any power strip or surge protector. Power the unit up if it does not. Status now?
