HP6700 encoder ribbon has detached on the left hand side. I've followed a useful thread on the 6500 model but the setup and tang is slightly different. Does anyone have a photo or diagram showing the location and placement of the tang on the left hand side please?

Hi @Jay582,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When dealing with the encoder ribbon on an HP OfficeJet 6700 series printer, it can indeed be tricky to reattach it if it has become detached. The encoder ribbon is crucial for accurate printhead positioning, and the process for reattaching it can differ slightly between printer models.

Here’s a step-by-step guide along with some general advice on reattaching the encoder ribbon, tailored to the HP OfficeJet 6700. Since I can’t provide a photo or diagram directly, I’ll describe the steps as clearly as possible:

Reattaching the Encoder Ribbon on HP OfficeJet 6700

1. Turn Off the Printer and Unplug It

  • Ensure the printer is completely powered off and unplugged from the electrical outlet. This prevents any risk of electrical shock or damage during the repair.

2. Open the Printer

  • Open the top cover or access door of the printer to expose the printhead and the encoder strip area.

3. Locate the Encoder Ribbon

  • The encoder ribbon is a thin, transparent strip with markings that run along the width of the printhead carriage path. It is usually held in place by a small tang or clip on the left-hand side of the printer.

4. Inspect the Tang and Ribbon

  • Tang Location: On the left-hand side of the printer, locate the small tang or clip where the encoder ribbon should be attached. This tang is often a small plastic piece or a clip that holds the ribbon in place.
  • Ribbon Alignment: The ribbon itself should be positioned just above the printhead carriage path.

5. Reattach the Encoder Ribbon

  • Position the Ribbon: Carefully align the encoder ribbon with the tang. The ribbon should be positioned so that it runs parallel to the printhead carriage path.
  • Insert the Ribbon into the Tang: Slide the end of the ribbon into the tang or clip. Ensure that the ribbon is seated evenly and securely. The ribbon may have small notches or tabs that need to fit into the tang.
  • Check Alignment: Make sure that the ribbon is straight and not twisted. The markings on the ribbon should be clear and visible.

6. Secure the Ribbon

  • Press Down: Gently press the ribbon into place within the tang. It should click or fit snugly into position. Ensure that the ribbon is not loose or sticking out.
  • Adjust if Needed: If the ribbon is not properly aligned or if it is too loose, carefully adjust it until it fits securely.

7. Close the Printer

  • Once the ribbon is reattached, close the top cover or access door of the printer. Ensure that no parts are obstructed and that everything is properly aligned.

8. Plug in and Test the Printer

  • Plug the printer back into the electrical outlet and turn it on. Perform a test print or alignment process to ensure that the printer recognizes the ribbon and functions correctly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
