HP Officejet Pro 8620 e-All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

I just started to get a Printer Failure message (no code) that says “There is a problem with the printer or ink system.  Turn the printer off, then on.  If problem persists, contact HP”.  I have done multiple factory resets, etc to no avail.  When i power the printer on it immediately give me an error.  It is not responsive when I try to use my Mac to update the firmware.  Please advise what to do.

Hi @SR71Blackbird1

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error you're encountering with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8620 ("There is a problem with the printer or ink system") is quite common and can sometimes be tricky to resolve. Given that you’ve already tried multiple factory resets, I’ll outline a few more troubleshooting steps that might help fix the issue.

1. Check for Ink Cartridge Issues

  • Remove and Reinstall Ink Cartridges: Sometimes, improperly seated ink cartridges can trigger this error. Turn off the printer, open the ink cartridge door, and carefully remove the ink cartridges. Wait for a few seconds, and then carefully reinstall the cartridges to make sure they’re seated properly.
  • Check for Blocked Contacts: Inspect the gold contacts on the cartridges and in the printer. Clean them gently with a lint-free cloth if you see any dirt or ink buildup.

2. Reset the Ink System

You can try performing a manual reset to see if it resolves the ink system error:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for 1-2 minutes.
  • Plug the printer back in, but don’t turn it on yet.
  • Now, press and hold the # and 9 buttons on the printer’s control panel simultaneously.
  • While holding these buttons, turn on the printer.
  • Continue to hold the buttons until the printer starts its reset process. This may take a few minutes.

3. Check for Paper or Obstructions Inside

  • Paper Jam: Even though it may not appear obvious, sometimes a small piece of paper can get stuck in the printer and cause an error. Check the printer thoroughly for any paper jams in both the paper tray and inside the printer mechanism.
  • Obstructions in the Printhead Area: Turn off the printer and carefully look for any debris, dust, or small objects that may be obstructing the printhead or ink cartridge area.

4. Firmware Update (Manually)

If the printer is not responsive to the Mac’s attempt to update the firmware, you can try updating the firmware through the HP Support website:

  • Visit the HP Support website.
  • Enter your printer model (HP OfficeJet Pro 8620).
  • Navigate to the Software and Drivers section and download the latest firmware for your printer.
  • Follow the instructions on the website to manually update the firmware on your printer.

5. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Leave it unplugged for at least 5 minutes.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

I hope this helps.
