I've seen several similar questions. Borrowing text (edited) from one of them: Printer indicated Magenta and Yellow (951) are depleted and must be replaced to continue printing. After installing the 2 new HP cartridges, immediately received a Printer Failure "There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on." with Error 72234 in the event log. I tried re-seating the cartridge caddy and performing an on/off sequence 3+ times per instructions in one of the other HP answers. When I reinstalled the 2 old depleted cartridges the 72234 error cleared and obviously the original "out of ink" message returned and I'm still unable to print (even in B&W).

Hi @Jack_C8112,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

I see that you are facing an issue with your printer that has an ink system error.

A) Please follow the steps below to perform a power drain.

1) Take out the cartridges

2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.

3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.

5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges

B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.

C) Refer to the steps on this link to further troubleshoot.

D) If the issue still persists, refer to the steps on this link to restore factory defaults and let me know if that resolves the issue.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day

Hi Jeff, I found this and went through all the steps and managed to clear this error, and even updated the firmware successfully; but now I'm told the new cyan ink cartridge whose installation started this circus of errors "appears to be damaged" as well as a second brand new cyan ink cartridge I've just now purchased.

Neither cartridge has ever printed, so if there's anything that "Damaged" these it's this printer - although I suspect both are fine and the printer might still be suffering a lapse in judgment.
