Hi! @Dmcclenny, Welcome to the HP Support community.

I understand the printer shortcut is missing after the windows update.

I'm sorry to know you lost all the printing shortcuts. But don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Excellent description and a great diagnosis done. It is greatly appreciated.

You have to install the full feature printer software on your PC to create a shortcut.

First, uninstall the printer software from the root level on your PC and install the full feature printer software and check if it helps.

In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.

Select your HP printer.

Select Uninstall.

In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.

In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”

Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.

Type printui.exe /s and click OK.

Click on Drivers tab.

Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.

Select OK.

Update the full feature printer software using this link. Click Here

Open-File Explorer > navigate to the printer's bin folder (name of the printer may vary):
C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 Printer\bin

Highlight HPPrint.exe > Right-Click on the file > Send to >> select Desktop (make a shorcut)

If you like:

Right-Click on the new shortcut on your Desktop > Properties > General > edit the name to what you like.

Also, you can try the steps recommended below.

  1. Go to Control Panel.
  2. Select Hardware and Sounds then click Devices and Printers.
  3. Choose your printer's name, right-click on it then select Create shortcut.

Get back to us with the outcome so we can help you out further.

Hope this answers your query!
Have a great day ahead! 🙂

I didn't lose my printer shortcut. I lost the custom Printing Shortcuts on the Properties screen that I had created.Capture.PNG

This happened after I updated the software for the printer.

@Dmcclenny, Thanks for your quick response and time again.

I appreciate your efforts for writing back to us.

As you mentioned the issue still persists after trying out the steps.

Try the steps recommended below.

1. Click the Start button and click on "Computer" to open a Windows Explorer window.

2. Click on "Organize" from the Tool bar and choose "Folder and search options" to open the Folder Options window.

3. Click on the "View" tab.

4. Click on the selection for "Show hidden files, folders or drives" and then click on "OK".

5. From the Windows Explorer window, navigate to the "C:\Users\username\AppData\Local" folder where "username" represents the username of the person currently logged into the computer.

6. Find the "IconCache.db" file and delete it.

7. Close the window and restart the computer and Windows will automatically rebuild the icon cache on reboot.

Rebuilding the icon cache should resolve the issue, but if not, you can troubleshoot the issue further by testing a newly created user account or by testing the system in Safe Mode.

Hope this helps!

Take Care! 🙂

Are you actually reading my response? I'm not missing the printer shortcut, I'm missing the PRINTING SHORTCUTS that I created. I attached a screenshot with my last response that shows the Printing Shortcuts. Did you look at the attachment? I'm sorry if my response seems harsh, but I've provided details of the issue but none of the solutions have addressed the issue. From the Print screen if you select Printer Properties you see the Document Properties screen. There you will see the Printing Shortcuts. You can create User Specified Print Settings, name them, and save them. I had created several of of these Shortcuts and after a software update for my printer, they were gone. I want to know why they are gone and if I recreate them, willl another update to the printer get rid of them again. The Printing Shortcuts that came with the printer are locked so that they can't be changed. Can I lock the ones that I create?

Hi! @Dmcclenny, thanks for your prompt response and time.

I appreciate your efforts for writing back to us.

The steps I had suggested in my previous post was to rebuild the deleted icons.

If the shortcuts were deleted during the update the steps suggested would help you in rebuilding them.

However, you can try the steps recommended below and check if it helps.

Access the settings window in Devices and Printers to select settings that apply to all your print jobs.

  1. Search Windows for 'printers', then click Devices and Printers in the search results.

  2. Right-click the icon for your printer, then click Printer properties.

Figure : Right click your printer and select Printer properties

Right click your printer and select Printer properties
  3. Click the Advanced tab, then click Printing Defaults.

Figure : Click Printing Defaults on the Advanced tab in Printer Properties

Click Printing Defaults on the Advanced tab in Printer Properties
  4. Change any settings you want as defaults in the Printing Defaults window, then click OK.

Lastly, if the issue still persists the printing shortcuts could have been deleted or corrupted due to which you are unable to find the printing shortcuts.

Try creating a new customer shortcut.

Refer this article to know more information about creating custom shortcuts. Click Here

Note: Refer the last two steps in the article.

Let me know if this works!

Take Care! 🙂
