Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After installing a brand new HP Cyan ink cartridge, my HP8710 Pro printer gives the message "There is a problem with the supply system"  (Cyan).  when I first try to print.  However, immediately after cartridge installation and before trying to print, when I open the HP Smart App, the cartridge  status symbols show a full Cyan column in blue.  It is only after trying to print that the above message displays, the printer locks up, and then when I look again at the HP Smart app, the Cyan column is a dashed line image with no blue color inside.  Any helpful advice would be most appreciated.   damos3@cfl.rr.com  2/2/2025, 17:36

Hi @dsoma19,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

This issue seems related to how the printer detects the new Cyan ink cartridge. Try these steps to resolve it:

Restart & Reset Printer

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Wait for 60 seconds and then plug it back in.
  3. Turn the printer on and try printing again.

Remove & reinsert the Cyan Cartridge

  1. Open the printer’s cartridge access door.
  2. Remove the Cyan cartridge and check:
    • Ensure the protective tape is completely removed.
    • Inspect for any visible damage or leaks.
  3. Reinsert the cartridge firmly into its slot.
  4. Close the access door and check if the error persists.

Clean the Cartridge & Printer Contacts

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Remove the Cyan cartridge again.
  3. Using a lint-free cloth & distilled water (or isopropyl alcohol):
    • Gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge.
    • Clean the contacts inside the printer where the cartridge connects.
  4. Let everything dry for a few minutes.
  5. Reinsert the cartridge, power on the printer, and try printing.

Check for Firmware Updates

  1. Open HP Smart App or go to HP Support.
  2. Enter your printer model and check for firmware updates.
  3. If an update is available, install it and restart your printer.

Reset the Ink System

  1. Remove all ink cartridges from the printer.
  2. Close the cartridge door and turn off the printer.
  3. Unplug the printer and wait for 2 minutes.
  4. Plug the printer back in, turn it on, and reinsert the cartridges.
  5. Check if the printer recognizes the Cyan ink.

Try a Different Cyan Cartridge

If the issue continues, your cartridge may be defective:

  • If possible, install another Cyan cartridge (borrow from a friend or use a spare).
  • If the printer recognizes the new one, your current Cyan cartridge is faulty.
  • Contact HP Support for a replacement if the cartridge is new.

Perform a Semi-Full Reset (If All Else Fails)

If nothing works, try resetting the printer:

  1. Unplug the printer.
  2. Press & hold # and 3 while plugging it back in.
  3. If the issue persists, try # and 6 for a deeper reset. (Not all models support these reset codes.)

If you still see the error, let me know what happens at each step, and I’ll help further! 😊
