The post I found on this the recommendation was to change to cardstock using the control panel.  The person with the original problem stated that wasn't an option and it isn't for me either (Paper thick seems to be the closest option)  Kind of annyoing that the only response after that was asking which model they were using when they had already provided that information.

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

It's a pleasure assisting you in finding answers to your technical queries.

Appreciate all your time and efforts.

To fix this issue, you need to make sure that your printing preferences under the actual printer and the program you are using are set to "cardstock".

Follow the steps below:

  1. Go to Control panel – Devices and printers.
  2. Right-click on Officejet 8740 and select “Printing preferences”.
  3. Under the Paper/Quality tab, change your paper type to "Cardstock".
  4. Make sure to select the correct paper size as well.
  5. Now, come to the program that you are using to print the cardstock (MS Word, Wordpad e.tc.), and change the paper type to “Cardstock”.

Try to print.

If the issue persists, I would suggest you could try to create a custom size and check if that helps.

You obviously did NOT read my post.  I explained that I had already went to the control panel to change it to cardstock.  CARDSTOCK IS NOT AN OPTION!!!!!  PLEASE GIVE AN ANSWER THAT ACTUALLY IS POSSIBLE TO USE.

I recommend you delete the driver at the root level and Install the drivers, follow the steps below:

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose `Delete' or `Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s")

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

Then, Click on this link:  https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-officejet-pro-8710-all-in-one-printer-... to download and install the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Drivers.

Now try to change the print setting.

I think I will just have to live with it not printing the way it is described that it can print.  I don't change these types of settings myself.  I tried once and it messed up more than it fixed.  I guess I know that my next printer will NOT be an HP since your product does not work as it is suppose to.  No one should have to go through that many steps to make the product work the way it is suppose to.

Why can it not be shared as others are having this same issue and it would seem beneficial to provide everyone a solution that works.  I have responded to the private message.

these directions don't work as the HP printer is not listed under Programs and features.

I may have found my own fix - no thanks to any one at HP who seem to know very little about how to change the printer settings or how to uninstall the printer.

I went to control panel

selected the printer

clicked on the tab set preferences

Paper Quality

for paper size I chose Index Card Letter (index cards are usually cardstock quality)

Paper type I chose plain paper, thick

My first test print seems to have worked.  Hopefully this will help someone else since NO one at HP suggested this fix.
