My printer only works if all cartridges both black and color are filled. I don't need the color and don't want to buy a new printer .  Is there a setting somewhere I don't know about?

Thanks

@weimlvr, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Yes. This is as per design. This model printer needs minimum level of ink in all 4 ink cartridges to print either in black or color. Even if you would like to print only in black, none of the color ink cartridges should be empty.

While printing from your MAC, you have an option to either print in Black or Color. However, this function still needs color ink cartridges to be not empty. The printer uses ink from all 4 ink cartridges to produce a perfect black.

Print dialog in macOS

Select/Deselect Black and White as required.

Printing in single ink cartridge mode is supported on printers that use 2 ink cartridges. One black and one tri-color.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
