I have a Designjet 5500ps 42" plotter at work and it has been routinely having the same major error.  It will work fine for a while, then a "check printhead path" error will happen, and when I restart I'll get a "Boot Failed" error that never goes away.  Error code: 1f50007

With the assistance of an HP technician, I've replaced the power supply, thinking that was the issue, and also replaced the hard disk.

Same problem in spite of those attempts to fix the problem.  And, no the printhead path isn't blocked.

Any ideas from more experienced users?

Many thanks in advance!

Issue with 1f50007 Hard Disk Failure.  With this error message displayed in the window as the hard drive is spinning up/booting up.  This is a common error encountered when the power supply located in the back of the printer is bad. Although the power supply board has enough power to bring the printer to a state of being on. The power supply board does not have enough power to bring the HDD up to the speed it needs to be at to spin up.  The Power Supply Board will turn the printer on but that is about it. Thus the above error will be displayed (1f50007).

Some on this forum ask that you test the leads with a volt meter. This is not necessary, checking the lights as listed below is all the indicator you will need.

The side of the Power Supply Board which is responsible for powering the HDD is bad. There are two large boards in the rear of the printer. You must first remove the metal housing that covers the rear of the printer.  Once the back is off there are two large boards.

Standing in the back of the printer, on the right is the Power Supply Board, on the left is the Main Control Board. The control board has the HDD connected to it with a small controller board on the right side of the main control board.  On the top left corner of the left board (Main Control Board) you will see either two or one light or lights on. These lights are very small and square around a few MM square in size.  In association with the error (1f50007) you will see on the bottom of the two lights an Orange light. Right above it is the Green light, this light must be bright green as bright as the Orange one below it. Should the Green light be ever so dim or out all together this is the indication that the power supply board is out, or has died.  The Green indicator tells us that the board is putting out enough Voltage to power the HDD, (it is bright Green) when the HDD side of the Power Board is working correctly.

Should the Green indicator light be not as bright as the Orange light the power board is not putting out enough voltage. Thus the HDD will not spin up to boot.  The HDD is simply not spinning fast enough for the processor to read what is coming from the HDD.  Replace the power supply board located on the right which should fix the issue.  I have replaced a number of these boards on large format HP printers that have had a lightly lit or dim Green indicator light.

The light will become bright green once the spin up has completed and the system moves onto initialization and reaches 100% at which point it will check the heads and any of the sub-systems which will produce a READY indicator and you are ready to print.

You may be at risk when trying to replace this power board.  Usually they are a few hundred dollars at least.  There is no way to tell when buying parted out equipment if the power supply you are buying is really good or not. It will be simply the luck of the draw during the purchase and installation.

Good Luck!

If doing this yourself, be sure to unplug the printer from the wall or power source before doing anything. Safety is all ways first.

Do you know if the power supply from a designjet 5000 would work in a 5500? I see new 5500 power supplies saying that they are 5000 compatible, but not seeing 5000 ps units saying they are 5500 compatible. Try it anyhow?

I had the exact problem you are describing. I turned the power off after two times telling me to check printer path.

Third time stated "Hard drive failure". Removed the back panel and checked for the green light above the orange light on the main board, it was really dim. Orderd one on ebay HP OEM power supply for my model no.($200) , HP has several different ones for the 5000-5500. Installed it, works great.
