I had not used my printer for several weeks and the first time I tried to after that, it would only print very light, smudged black lines.

I have tried all the online tips and suggestions from friends I could find with no luck (using the printers tool's to clean, etc;)

I have not yet tried purchasing new ink cartridges due to cost as compared cost of printer.

Hi! @K9Roy, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand you when you print from your printer the printer prints light black streaks across the page.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Have you tried checking with a different ink cartridge?

Does the issue persist when you make a copy from your printer?

Have you tried printing from a different application? Does the issue persist?

Replace low, empty or faulty ink cartridges on your printer.

Try printing a Print Quality Diagnostic report and check if the issue persists.

If the copy works fine uninstall the printer software from root level on your PC and install the full feature printer software and check if it helps.

In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.

Select your HP printer.

Select Uninstall.

In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.

In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”

Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.

Type printui.exe /s and click OK.

Click on Drivers tab.

Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.

Select OK.

Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.

Close Devices and Printers.

Update the full feature printer software using this link. Click Here

Try the steps recommended below.

Replace any low or empty ink cartridges.

Clean the ink cartridges

Use the automated tool to clean the ink cartridges.

NOTE:

To avoid issues that require cleaning, always turn the printer off with the Power button.

  1. On the control panel, swipe down to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setupicon.

  2. Swipe up on the display, and then touch Printer Maintenance.

  3. Touch Clean Cartridges, and then touch Continue.

A Print Quality Diagnostic page prints.

  4. Examine the Print Quality Diagnostic page.

    • If the print quality is unacceptable, touch Clean Again to continue the next level of cleaning. Repeat these steps for the third cleaning stage, if necessary.

      NOTE:

If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes before you perform both levels of cleaning again.

Align the printer

Use an automated tool to align the ink cartridges.

  1. On the printer control panel, swipe down to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setupicon.

  2. Swipe up on the display, and then touch Printer Maintenance.

  3. Touch Align Cartridges, and then touch Continue.

The printer prints an alignment page.
