Help! I'm stuck at home due to Covid-19 so I'm desperately trying to hook up my printer. I used this printer for about a month when I first got it (as a gift) in 2012, but it got an error message and so rather than dealing with it I just stopped printing at home and did all my printing at work. But now I need to print at home again. So, here's the situation. Any help you can provide would be SO appreciated.

1. When I plug in the printer the on button flashes green and I get an orange exclamation point next to the display screen and I get two orange flashing lights on the images of printer cartridges. There are cartridges in the printed, but now they're 7 years old, so they could be shot.

2. I downloaded the drivers from the internet and ran them, but couldn't get through the steps to connect the printer to the computer either via wireless of with a cord. It acts as if it doesn't register that the computer in plugged into the printer.
3. When I run the scan doctor 5.3 it says it's communicating with the printer, but then gets stuck at the very end of the loading bar and does not progress from there.

So I'm wondering which of these issues I need to tackle first and how I should do it. All help and suggestions greatly appreciated. I'm desperate.

Welcome to HP support community.

Follow these steps to fix the connectivity issues:

  • On the printer, press and hold the Wireless button  for five seconds or until the light starts blinking.
  • Within two minutes, press and hold the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) button on the router until the connection process begins. The light on the printer stops flashing when the connection completes.

Here are the steps to fix the cartridge issue

Clean the cartridge contacts

  1. Gather the following items:

    • Clean distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available.

    • Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well).

  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves into the middle of the access area, unless there is an obstruction.

  3. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  4. Press down on one of the cartridges to release it, and then pull it out from its slot.

       CAUTION:

Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  5. If there is tape on the cartridge, remove it. Do not remove the copper-colored strip.

If you removed the tape from the cartridge, there is no need to clean the cartridge. Continue to the step to reinstall the cartridge.

  6. Place the cartridge on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up

  7. Dip a swab in the clean water and squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should only be slightly damp.

  8. Clean the cartridge contacts.
