OfficeJet 8620
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

A few days ago, I updated the firmware on my OfficeJet 8620 to version FDP1CN1825AR.

I was about to scan a document when I noticed an alert that a new version was available.

I acknowledged the update and it appeared to work correctly (at least I was able to peform the document scan).

Today was the first time I tried to print with the new firmware.  It did not print but reported "Missing or Failed Printhead."

I followed the recovery steps listed on this support page (removing power, reseating printhead) multiple times without success.

I recognize it could truly be a failed printhead but the timing of the fault w.r.t. to the firmware upgrade is suspcious.

Before buying a new printhead (or printer), I would like to try downgrading the firmware to the previous version.

Where can I find the previous version of the firmware for the OfficeJet 8620 (before August 3, 2018)?

Thanks in advance!

P.S.  FWIW, I have always used genuine HP ink cartridges.

FWIW, I couldn't figure out how to revert to older firmware.

It was much cheaper to buy a new printer than a new HP OfficeJet 8620 printhead.

Case closed (for me).

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

This is a great place to get support, find answers to your technical queries.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

What is error message without the cartridge?

What is the error message without the printhead?

Solution two: Reseat the printhead

Follow these steps to reseat the printhead.

   NOTE:

You do not need to remove the printhead from the carriage.

Step 1: Unseat the printhead

  1. Slip your fingers into the slot on the left side of the printer, and then pull forward to open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the left side of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before proceeding.

Figure : Open the cartridge access door

    1. Slot on the left side of the printer

  2. Unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer. Unplugging the printer prevents the carriage from moving.

       WARNING:

You must disconnect the power cord before reaching inside the printer to avoid risk of injuries or electric shock.

  3. Lift the carriage latch.

  4. Grasp the sides of the printhead, and then slightly lift the printhead without fully removing it from the carriage.

Step 2: Reseat the printhead, and then lower the carriage latch

  1. Reinsert the printhead into the carriage to reseat it. As you guide the printhead into the carriage, it settles into the carriage as it seats.

    Figure : Reseat the printhead

    Image: Reseat the printhead.
  2. Gently rock the printhead to the left and right to make sure that the printhead fully seats in the carriage.

  3. Lower the carriage latch.

    Image: Lower the carriage latch.
  4. Make sure that the carriage latch is down.

    Figure : Carriage latch positions

    1. Carriage latch is up

    2. Carriage latch is down

  5. Close the ink cartridge access door.

  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  7. If the printer does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.

  8. Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

  • If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists, see the next step.

Step 3: Reseat the printhead up to three times

Sometimes error messages persist after inserting the printhead. To clear any error messages, reseat the printhead by repeating all steps in this solution up to three times.

Keep me posted, how it goes! However, we'll try and follow up in next 24 to 48 hours to doublecheck on the issue.

I'm having the exact same behavior.  No issues with printing.  Then noticed that the printer was prompting to do an update of the firmware.  Auto-updates are not enabled.  Since then I continuously receive the error stateing that there is an issue with the print head.

I have always used HP ink.

I tried following the above steps, however the message has persisted.

Additionally, I have tried to roll back to an earlier firmware, however the install will not proceed since the printer is stating that it is currently up to date on the firmware.

I performed a semi full reset on the printer which changed the firmware to version FDP1CN1828AR (from FDP1CN1825AR) but it's now in a worse state than before.  I do not recommend you try this.
