Need help with seeing ink levels on my HP deskjet 5650 printer. No warning of low ink levels are given and sometimes because ink levels are low I end up with poor quality printing and that is when I know ink levels are low. The other problem being that I cannot tell which ink, black or tri-color, is low

Welcome to HP forums, I see that you want to know how to check ink levels.
You will have to print a diagnostic page to check the ink level.
-
Make sure the printer is on and loaded with unused, plain, white paper.
-
Press and hold the Power button, then click the Cancel button once. Then release both buttons. The diagnostic page prints.
Figure : Power and Cancel buttons
-
-
Press and hold Power -
Press Cancel.
-
Check ink levels
Look in the middle of the diagnostic page. The bars with "E" (for "empty") and "F" (for "full") at each end show the ink levels in the cartridges. As ink is used, the solid color changes to a faded color.
Figure : Left (tri-color) cartridge almost full - right cartridge empty
Figure : Both left and right cartridges almost full
Let me know if thatr helps.
To thank me for my efforts to help you, please mark my post as an accepted solution so that it benefits several others.
Cheers.

Hi Sandytechy20, i searched on HPs site for information on ink levels in my 5650 when i came across your solution here. i tried it and got a page to print out but i do not see the empty-full bars. what does the complete page look like? actually, i just noticed that after the initial block of text (hp deskjet 5600 Series, Serial #, Service ID, FW rev, page count, PCL set, and Mfg) it says Error Code: 905D0303. that probably isn't good...

Welcome to the HP Community
Could you please help me with the operating system of the computer?
Meanwhile, I recommend you delete the driver at the root level and Install the drivers, follow the steps below:
Remove the USB if connected
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose `Delete' or `Remove Device'
6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s")
8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
Then, Click on this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-deskjet-5650-printer-series/304441 select the operating system of your computer and download and install the drivers.
If the driver is not available.
Click on this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01796879 for Installing and Using the Windows Built-in Print Driver.
Hope this works!
Keep me posted, how it goes!
Have a great day!
Cheers:)

hi @Raj1788,
yes, i think part of my problem is we just updated our computer (although maybe not) and are now running windows 10, 64-bit.
as for your suggested drivers, i am fairly certain there is no driver listed under your first link ( https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-deskjet-5650-printer-series/304441 ) as i had already found that page and was thoroughly confused by the nature of the page which is, near as i can tell, "come over here and get the driver for your printer/OS" except that there is no driver on that page. rather just a link to a different page (your second link it seems?) telling one how to use the drivers i already have on the computer.
so, i suppose for **bleep**s'n'grins, ill go through this but im not sure how its going to get me anywhere--seems ill just end up right back where i am, running an old HP printer with a windows driver that doesnt seem to have the capability of the driver which originally came with the printer...

ok as i go through this, heres things i noticed:
in steps 1-3, there was no HP printer installed so i was not able to uninstall it (or it wasnt obvious to me what/where the driver was that was to be uninstalled)
4-5 ok
6-8 ok
9: when i click "Remove" a second window opens that asks "Do you want to remove the driver(s) only, or remove the driver(s) and driver package(s) from your system?" The option "Remove driver only." is the default selection so i switched to "Remove driver and driver package." and then...
10 ok
11 "Apply" is greyed out and not selectable. there is no ok button. i clicked close instead.
12 ok
as i said before, theres no driver listed under the first link so now im on the "HP Printers - Installing and Using the Windows Built-in Print Driver" page (but, again, is this not what i just removed from my computer?). oh and, by the way, the little HP Print and Scan Doctor window that pops on TOP of the webpage is kind of annoying--theres no way to close it and its sitting right on top of what im trying to read.
Step 1: already had windows set to auto d-load manufacturers' apps and icons
Step 2: computer is connected to the internet, check; printer is on, check; USB connection to printer, check; dammit, missed the window that popped open while i was typing. im guessing something loaded cause when i unplug/replug in the usb cable, nothing happens...and i can print.
so now im supposed to be done
printing the windows test page provides no information on ink levels
still dont know how to align the print heads
