I signed up for Instant Ink a month ago and was sent my first set of ink.  The problem is that I'm not permitted to connect my pronter to my university internet and obviously Instant Ink can't know ink levels etc.  Despite this, Instant Ink has started billing me and states that ""HP Instant Ink is installed"...but it isn't!  I'm getting billed despite not having started using the Instant Ink supply.  I can't find any way to contact HP about this.  Any suggestions?

You are being charged because you have signed up for the service.  Printing is being blocked because Instant Ink requires the printer to be connected to the Internet.    You probably will need to cancel your account and replace the Instant Ink cartridges with standard retail cartridges if you cannot get the printer connected to the Internet.

Log into the HP Instant Ink site, the phone number (or chat option for some countries) will be listed in the lower right of the opening screen.

Thanks for the reply.  While what you said makes sense, there's no link to a phone or chat option from my Instant Ink page.  That's the crux of my issue...I have no way to contact HP about the Instant Ink program or my plan specifically.

Hey there! @Keefer147, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand you have not yet installed the instant ink cartridges but you are getting billed.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Please share the printer model name of your printer to assist you better.

I understand your concern and situation. But not to worry I'll try to help you out.

If you are using an instant ink ready printer and if you insert the setup cartridges the billing would get started. You can check the printer box if it states "Instant ink ready".

If so then you will be billed once you insert the ink cartridges on your printer.

“Your Instant Ink account page has data on past deliveries and estimated shipments.  It also helps you understanding what state your cartridges are in based on HP’s data.  Any issues will be shown with steps to fix.  Please check your account page to see the latest cartridge information by signing into your account at “instantink.com”.

The HP Instant Ink billing cycle begins on the day you insert your first HP Instant Ink cartridges in your enrolled printer. Your credit or debit card is billed 30 days after you insert your first HP Instant Ink cartridges. For example, if you insert HP Instant Ink cartridges on February 5, the billing cycle begins on February 5 and ends on March 4. The first credit or debit card charge is applied on March 5. The billing date cannot be changed, and the monthly fee is charged on the same day each month while you are enrolled.

Hey there! @Keefer147, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand you have been billed even when you are using regular ink cartridges on your printer.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

The instant ink program starts when you install the instant ink cartridges shipped from HP.

As @Bob_Headrick said if you are using an instant ink ready printer with ready cartridges the billing would start immediately.

Also, if you are using even a single instant ink cartridge on the printer it will still count the pages.

When you sign up for an HP Instant Ink plan, you pay a monthly fee to print a defined number of pages per month. The plans are based on the number of pages that you print, not on how many ink cartridges you use. Your monthly fee pays for ink, shipping, and recycling. If you do not print all of your plan pages in a month, you can roll over up to two times the number of pages per month in your plan. If you print more pages, there is an additional charge but you are still paying the same price per page as your base plan.

When you are enrolled in HP Instant Ink, you do not need to purchase replacement ink cartridges from retail stores. Review the following:

  • HP monitors the ink levels when your printer is connected to the Internet and Web Services is turned on.

  • Replacement ink cartridges are automatically shipped when your ink cartridges have enough ink to print twice the number of pages included in your monthly plan. You do not receive replacement ink cartridges every month, but they should arrive before you run out of ink.

  • Replacement ink cartridges can take up to 10 days to arrive, which should be sufficient for customers with regular usage.
