My printer is an older hp photosmart but I have a new Chromebook. The color ink cartridge is not working but I can't get any support from hp - it has to be either a Windows or Mac operating system. Does anyone else have this dilemma and how have you deal with it?

Welcome to HP support community.
Did you make a copy and check if that prints fine?
If not, follow the below steps:
Print a self-test report
-
Load the paper tray with unused plain white paper.
-
Press Setup. The Setup menu displays.
-
Press the down arrow
or the up arrow
to highlight Print Report, then press OK.
-
Press OK again. The self-test report prints.
If that does not print in color, follow the steps mentioned below:
Run the clean print cartridges utility
-
Press the Setup button.
-
Press the down arrow key.
-
Select Clean Print Cartridge and then press OK. The device prints a test page.
-
Examine the test page. If the print quality of the page is good, stop here. If the print quality is bad, go on to the next step for further cleaning.
-
Open the Printer Toolbox. There are two ways to do this:
-
Open HP Solution Center, select the Settings menu, then the Print Settings submenu, and finally the Printer Toolbox.
-
Open Printers and Faxes in the Windows Control Panel, then right-click your printer icon and choose Properties. Click Printing Preferences. Click the Features tab, then click the Printer Services button.
-
-
The Printer Toolbox opens. On the Device Services tab, click Clean the Print Cartridges
