I purchase a couple of HP61 XL black ink cartridges a couple of months ago (February), through Walmart.com. I used one cartridge right away and just now got to the point of needing to changes cartridges, again. I put the other cartridge in and received an error message "issue with cartridge". I took the cartridge out and reinserted it, no change. I looked online to see if the there was a solution and attempted all of the fixes that HP offered. One post said that it could be a printer issue, another poster commented and suggested to put in the old cartridge to see if the problem remained. I tried that and my printer worked as normal. I really needed to print something that day so I took the defective cartridge to Walmart and wanted to exchange it for a new one. They wouldn't let me exchange it because it was opened (duh...), they said that they couldn't be sure that I wasn't just giving them an empty cartridge. Because I really needed to print, I bought more ink. Now, I've spent twice the money I planned and am out $42 for a cartridge that NEVER printed a drop of ink. How can I get it exchanged or get a refund? When I asked Walmart about this, I was directed to contact HP for support.

The cartridges do have a warranty, see the document here for information. To get warranty coverage you will need to go to the Contact HP page, then enter the information for your printer. At this point, it will likely say "Manufacturer's warranty has expired". To the right of this it will say "See details". Click the "See details" link, which will open another page with more details. Near the bottom of the text will be a paragraph that says :
HP has checked your product information, including the product and serial numbers, to determine your warranty results. The legal warranty expiration date is based on the date of purchase, as indicated on your receipt. If you feel these results are incorrect, you may submit a dispute for review. Dispute this >
Click on the "Dispute this" link which will ask for some additional contact information. Fill out the contact information, then in the bottom section select:
