HP 7500A E910A

Ok, so I have my 8 year old 7500A wide carriage printer that was working fine even with aftermarket ink.  The printer has been rarely used, probably less than 500 sheets printed over its lifetime.  It is an ink hog as it always has to be cleaned since it is used so little.  The $100 cost to refit with new 920 cartridges is pretty painful since I probably print less than 100 sheets before they are spent.  I switched to aftermarket ink a few months back and it worked fine although the printer gives the message  that it has counterfeit cartridges upon powerup.  Yesterday, my wife tried to print a page and it indicated a paper jam.  She opened up all the doors and saw nothing. Then the printer gave a series of messages and will no longer print anything.  It gives a message "Improper Shutdown" To avoid damage use the On button to shut down.  Do not use power strip or wall switch..."  After acknowledging this, it gives the message "General Error  There is a problem with the printer.  Refer to Printer Documentation.  0x61011beb.  Of course there is no documentation from HP that I can see concerning this error. The print carriage does not come to the middle and stop when opening the carriage access door.  It stays on the right side, although it moves back and forth a bit.  The carriage can't be moved unless the printer is powered down.   Some of the other forums state that this error means that the printer is trash and needs to be replaced. I tried to dissassemble the unit and removed most of the covers, but could not see how to remove the carriage access door to actually get inside the unit.  There appears to be a Y-bracket that has fallen off a shaft on the right side. I couldn't see any obvious way to remove the top cover to allow access to the final 3 screws to remove the outer shell, but I was able to work this bracket back on the shaft.  I don't know if it is installed correctly.  After reinstalling all the covers, the same errors are still there, so my efforts were wasted so far.

Here are the questions:

1.  How is the carriage access door that has the scanner removed?  It has two hinges, but I don't see how to release them.

2.  Can this loose bracket be the cause of all the issues?  Can it be replaced?
