I bought a used Officejet 6500a Plus for $20. Fax and scan work but it doesn't print. Device was stored and unused for a couple of years and I don't know if the problem is the cartridges or the printhead. Either way, I can't afford a large investment on it and would like to know if there is a way to determine the problem before buying new cartirdges, etc. Thanks for any guidance.

Are there any error messages? If not the printhead is probably electrically sound, though it may be clogged with dried ink. I would suggest going through the troubleshooting steps in the document here, including soaking the printhead. If the printer prints any sign of ink on the test page then it is probably recoverable. You might also try soaking the ink cartridges in hot water for five minutes or so. Put the ink cartridge in a couple inches of hot water with the ink outlet down in the water and the latch end up.
