Hi @Gremlinsinside,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
The HP Photosmart C5180 is a discontinued model, but there are still steps you can take to troubleshoot the "unknown cartridge" issue.
Check Cartridge Compatibility
- Ensure you are using genuine HP cartridges compatible with the Photosmart C5180.
- Verify that the cartridge model number matches the printer requirements.
Inspect Cartridge and Cartridge Contacts
- Remove the cartridge and inspect it for any damage.
- Clean the cartridge contacts and the printer cartridge slot contacts with a soft, lint-free cloth slightly moistened with distilled water.
Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
- Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn on the printer.
- Reinsert the cartridges and see if the issue persists.
Update Firmware (if possible)
- Check the HP Support page to see if there are any firmware updates available for the HP Photosmart C5180.
- Download and install the firmware update.
Perform Printer Diagnostics
- Open the printer menu and navigate to the diagnostics section to perform any available self-tests.
- This may help identify if there is a deeper issue with the printer's hardware.
I hope this helps.
