Every time I want to print my hp printer says out of paper and it suggests colorlock paper. I do have letter paper in the printer.

I have tried everything I could think of. Any suggestions?

Hi @Fishinfan,

Thanks for stopping by the HP community. A very good day to you. 🙂 I reviewed the post regarding the printer displaying an out paper error message. I will be delighted to assist you here. 🙂

Superb description and stupendous diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this.

  • Did this happen after a power outage or surge?
  • Did you make copies directly from the printer and check if it copies correctly?

For a start please try these steps:

  • Please make 2 copies directly from the printer and check if it picks paper and copies correctly.
  • Please try with different paper sizes also.
  • If it does not then please perform all the prescribed steps from this link: http://hp.care/2t310GN for paper pick issues,

If it still persists, then the printer has a hardware issue and needs to be replaced by calling HP phone support.

HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://hp.care/2r9wSvP

  • Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.

  • Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.
  • Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

They will be happy to assist you immediately. If the unit is under warranty repair services is taken care of by the manufacturer’s warranty.

The error just happened, no power surge. it was printing just fine and suddenly just happened.

Yes, I tried different paperr sizes and tried coping.

I had same issue.  "Out of paper" when the tray was full.  Got rid of a bunch of paper.  Blew out the system and cleaned every roller I could see.

On the verge of buying another printer, I thought 'bollocks' - if I wreck it, so be it.  On turning over the printer and pulling back the paper tray, I noticed a 1/4" spring which didn't appear to be doing anything.  I pulled down the assembly with the two grey rollers and behind, I could see a plastic post.  No idean how the spring came off but my guess is that it is supposed to put some tension on the roller assembly.  I managed to pop the spring back over the post and voila!

Everything works as normal.

I had the same error but fixed it by installing all HP updates for the printer, resetting my PC and unplugging the printer, left it that way for 1 minute and plugged back in.  Everything works fine now
