Hi @baystatebob,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The 49.4A.04 error on an HP LaserJet 600 M601 printer is a common firmware or communication error that can be caused by corrupt print jobs, outdated firmware, or hardware issues. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and fix the error.

Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait about 30 seconds, then plug it back in and turn the printer on.
  • See if the error clears after restarting.

Cancel Print Jobs

  • If the error is caused by a specific print job, clear the print queue on the computer sending the job:
    • On Windows: Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Right-click your printer and select See what's printing, then cancel the job.
    • On macOS: Open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, find your printer, and cancel any pending jobs.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Ensure the printer's firmware is up to date:
    • Go to the HP support website and search for the latest firmware for your HP LaserJet 600 M601 model.
    • Download and install the update as per the instructions on the website.

Remove and Reinstall Drivers

  • Corrupt drivers can sometimes cause this error.
    • Uninstall the current printer driver.
    • Download the latest driver from HP's website and reinstall it.

Check for Faulty Print Jobs

  • If the error occurs after sending specific documents, those files might be corrupt or contain incompatible data. Try printing a simple document like a text file or test page to isolate the issue.

Check Printer Memory (DIMMs)

  • If you've recently added memory (DIMM modules) to the printer, remove it and see if the error persists. Faulty or incompatible memory can cause the printer to show this error.

Reset the Printer

  • Perform a cold reset to return the printer to factory settings:
    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Turn it on while holding the green checkmark button (OK button) until Cold Reset or Restore Factory Settings appears on the screen.
    3. Release the button and let the printer reset.

Network or Communication Issue

  • If the printer is networked, there may be a communication problem between the printer and the computer. Disconnect the network cable, restart the printer, and try printing locally via USB.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
