Continuous Printer Jam errors although I have verified there is no actual jam. I have also restarted the printer per the online support instructions.

Is there a way to correct this issue or is my printer essentially dead?

Hi @NJNomad,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A persistent "Paper Jam" message on an HP printer, even after verifying there’s no actual jam and restarting the printer, could be caused by several issues. Here's how you can troubleshoot.

Inspect the Paper Path Thoroughly

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open all access doors, including input and output trays.
  • Check for small torn paper pieces, dust, or foreign objects in the paper path, rollers, or feed mechanism.
  • Use a flashlight to ensure no obstructions are hidden.

Clean the Rollers

  • Dust or dirt on the rollers can cause false jam errors.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the rollers. Rotate the rollers manually while cleaning.
  • Let them dry completely before turning the printer back on.

Check for Sensor Issues

  • Paper jam sensors can malfunction due to dirt, debris, or misalignment.
  • Look for small levers or sensors along the paper path and ensure they are not stuck or dirty. Use a can of compressed air to clean them.

Use Correct Paper

  • Ensure the paper loaded is not wrinkled, curled, or of uneven thickness.
  • Confirm the paper type and size match the printer settings.
  • Fan the stack of paper before loading it to prevent sticking.

Reset the Printer

  • Disconnect the power cord and USB/network cable (if connected).
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds before plugging the power cord back in.
  • Turn the printer on and test again.

Update Firmware

  • Outdated firmware can sometimes cause phantom errors.
  • Check for updates via the HP Smart app or the printer’s support page.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Unplug the printer while it is on.
  • Hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
