HP Officejet 4500 All-in-One Printer - G510g

HP Officejet 4500 (usb connected to PC Win 10) Prints no problem from the Word Processor. But selecting HP smart it says the Printer is offline. I have run "Diagnose & Fix" it comes up with no issues found. Have changed usb port on the PC. Turned printer off and on but not joy getting HP smart to show it as online.

Hi @MHJW,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet 4500 printer is showing as offline in HP Smart and you can't scan, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you:

Check the Hardware:

  • Make sure your printer is powered on and properly connected to your computer via USB. If there are any loose or disconnected cables, secure them.

Restart the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for about 30 seconds. Plug it back in and turn it on. This can help reset the printer and reestablish the connection.

Check USB Connection:

  • Ensure that the USB cable is securely connected to both the printer and your computer. Try a different USB port on your computer if the issue persists.

HP Smart Software:

  • Ensure that you have the latest version of the HP Smart software installed on your computer. You can download and install it from the official HP website.

Restart Your Computer:

  • Sometimes, restarting your computer can help resolve connectivity issues.

Check Printer Status:

  • On your computer, go to "Devices and Printers" (in Windows) or "Printers & Scanners" (in macOS) and check if the HP OfficeJet 4500 is listed as the default printer. If it's not, right-click on it and set it as the default printer.

Printer Status:

  • On the printer's display, check for any error messages or warnings. Resolve any paper jams, low ink, or other issues indicated by the printer.

Reinstall the Printer:

  • If none of the above steps work, try removing the printer from your computer and reinstalling it. To do this, go to "Devices and Printers" (in Windows) or "Printers & Scanners" (in macOS), right-click on the printer, and select "Remove Device" (Windows) or "Delete" (macOS). Then, reinstall the printer using the HP Smart software.

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Make sure your printer drivers are up to date. You can download the latest drivers from the HP website.

Firewall and Security Software:

  • Ensure that your firewall or security software isn't blocking communication between your computer and the printer.

Wireless Connection (if available):

  • If you have the option to connect your printer wirelessly, you might consider setting it up for a wireless connection, as this can sometimes resolve USB connection issues.

By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue of your HP OfficeJet 4500 showing as offline and not being able to scan using HP Smart.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
