Microsoft Windows 11

It does print a sample page, and originally it was giving me a message "Printer in error state". Then I downloaded the Print and Scan repair program and ran it but it kept looping on stage 2, telling me some changed had been made and I needed to restart, which I did four times but it never got past Stage 2. Also I tried a hard reboot and nothing is working.

Hi @Dedalus100

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're having a frustrating experience with your HP OfficeJet 8020, and I can understand how annoying that can be. Let's walk through a few troubleshooting steps to get your printer working properly again.

1. Check for Error Messages and Printer Status

First, make sure that there are no other error messages or issues showing on the printer's control panel. If the printer is still showing "Printer in error state," there could be something preventing it from printing.

2. Perform Basic Printer Checks

  • Check for paper jams: Open the printer’s paper tray and the cartridge access door to ensure that there are no stuck papers or obstructions inside the printer.
  • Check ink cartridges: Ensure the ink cartridges are properly installed and that they aren’t empty or dried out.
  • Ensure there’s enough paper: Sometimes the printer will display an error if there’s not enough paper in the tray.

3. Restart the Printer and Computer

  • Power off the printer, unplug it from the wall for about 30 seconds, and then plug it back in.
  • Restart your computer as well to make sure all communication between your computer and the printer is reset.

4. Reinstall Printer Drivers

It’s possible that the issue is related to outdated or corrupted drivers, especially since the Print and Scan Repair program wasn’t able to resolve the problem. Let’s reinstall the printer drivers manually:

  • Uninstall the Printer:
    1. On your computer, go to Control PanelDevices and Printers.
    2. Right-click on your HP OfficeJet 8020 printer and select Remove Device.
  • Download and Install the Latest Drivers:
    1. Go to the HP Support website: HP Support - OfficeJet 8020 Drivers.
    2. Enter your printer model (HP OfficeJet 8020) and download the latest printer driver for your operating system (Windows 10, Windows 11, etc.).
    3. Install the new driver and follow the on-screen instructions. If you’re using the HP Smart app, make sure to reinstall it from the Microsoft Store or the HP website.

5. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Again)

I hope this helps.

It turn out that the Officejet pro 8020 has a relationship problem with windows 11. I had been using a chromebook which printed fine and then switched to a HP windows 11 laptop which apparently didn't know how to access the printer until I  ended up deleting and then reinstalling the printer. All is well now.
