Hi @jonathanspiers,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is having trouble with printing, scanning, and copying, even though it can print the alignment sheet. Since you've already tried diagnostics, unplugging, restoring factory settings, and using a new black cartridge, here are a few additional steps you can take.

Check for Firmware Updates: Make sure the printer's firmware is up to date. Sometimes, a firmware update can fix issues that affect printing functionality.

Check for Paper Jams or Blockages: Even if the printer can print the alignment sheet, make sure there are no paper jams or blockages in the printer's paper path that could prevent normal printing or scanning.

Try a Print from the Computer: Make sure that when you select to print using the black ink only, it's set to print in grayscale (black & white) from the printer properties on your computer. Sometimes this setting can get mixed up and cause it to attempt color printing even when only black ink is selected.

Reset the Printer's Ink System:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Wait for about 1 minute, then plug it back in and power it on.
  • Try printing again to see if this helps reset the printer's ink system.

Check Ink Cartridges and Carriage Movement: Even though the black ink cartridge is new, the color cartridges being low may still be an issue. Some printers require all cartridges to have a certain amount of ink in them to function, even if you are printing in black only. Try removing and reinserting the cartridges, ensuring they click into place properly.

Check for Print Queue Issues: Ensure there are no stalled print jobs in the print queue that might be causing the issue. Cancel any print jobs that are stuck and restart the print process.

Use HP Smart or HP Print and Scan Doctor: Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool on your computer to check for additional issues or settings that might be affecting printing. This tool can also help resolve network or connectivity issues.

Check the Scanner Glass: Ensure that there is no dirt or obstruction on the scanner glass that could cause scanning or copying to fail.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
