Hello,
I was printing, and the color ink ran out, but there is plenty of black ink. I put in a new color ink cartridge. The printer says it needs more black ink. I tried turning the printer on and off. It says more black ink. I put the old color cartridge back in, and it prints an alignment page that has no colors on it. I put the new color cartridge in, and it says it needs black ink.
The monochromatic LCD says it needs it needs a solid circle. The black ink cartridges have a solid circle. The color ink cartridges have a hollow circle.

Thank you Mr Robot. I tried turning the printer off and back on, but it is still broken. When I follow the support link to exchange the ink cartridge, I get taken back here.
I checked Consumer Reports and ordered a Brother MFC-J680DW off of Amazon.

Hey there! @dannyman, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!
I understand you have ink cartridge issues with your printer.
Don't worry I'll try to help you out.
Did you make any changes to your printer?
Does the issue persist when you put the old ink cartridge back to your printer?
As you mentioned after replacing the black ink cartridge on your printer you are getting error needs more black ink.
Reset the printer
Please try few steps recommended below.
Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 60 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE:
HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
Refer this article to further troubleshoot ink cartridge issues with your printer.
