HP 8610
iOS 12 - 12.0.1

Hello, my 8610 is set up wirelessly through my router. I can print fine at all times from my Windows devices.  However, when attempting to print from our iPhones or iPads, the devices cannot find the printer unless we power cycle the printer. Even then, the IOS devices will only be able to find the 8610 for a couple of minutes.  I have tried the various things found elsewhere in this community such as putting the IOS devices on the same 802.11 network, setting the printer to a manual, fixed IP above .160, setting the printer to IPv4 only, rebooted the printer, router and cable modem and verified that the router forwards BonJour packets.  I have also confirmed in the printer settings that Airprint Status is on.

2. Operating System installed (if applicable)
• Windows 10 on PCs, IOS 12.x on IOS devices
3. Error message (if any)
• IOS devices say "No AirPrint Printers Found
4. Any changes made to your system before the issue occurred

You have not mentioned which software you are using to print from your iOS device(s).

In general, the setup is the same:  download and install the software

In particular, though, the steps to connect the software to your network and printer might be a bit different depending on the program you are using.

General Suggestions

If you are depending on a Wirless connection to the printer,

If your router supports 5GHz, Set the router to broadcast both 5GHz and 2.4GHz.

That means:  Remember that your router must be set to broadcast 2.4GHz for the printer.

In general, you will have fewer problems when you give each of the bandwidths their own SSID name.

For example,

Bandwidth broadcast 5GHz SSID name = My5Network

Bandwidth broadcast 2.4GHz SSID name = My24Network

If the printer must be constantly restarted to maintain the connection, consider:

There may be an IP Address conflict on the network and / or one of more of your devices is interfering with the printer connection.

For example, more than one device might be trying to use the same IP address.

Log in on your router and take a look at the connected devices list - check the IP addresses

If you do not know how to check / use your router, at least try switching off all your devices except the printer and one other device.  Check the connection status.  Add one device at a time, waiting and checking whether or not the printer remains connected as the new device is switched on (and therefore added to the network).  If you find a conflict, you will have to resolve the error / setup using methods you know how to use.

I can offer the following for you to read / check / try:

Mobile Printing

Print from your Android, iOS, or Amazon Fire device with the HP Mobile printing app.

Thank you for the suggestions.

I am using the Safari web browser and then clicking on the share button. I then scroll to Print. If the printer can be seen, it will appear on the next screen. I can also choose to Select Printer. The IOS device will then look for AirPrint printers. In this case, it does not find any.

I also tried printing from the Microsoft Word app on my iPhone. I got the same result: No AirPrint Printers Found.

I confirmed that my router is broadcasting both 2.4 and 5 GHz. Several other devices that I have are 2.4 only. They all work fine.  For example, my smart thermostat is 2.4 only. I can read and control it from my IOS devices without any issue.

Lastly, I checked for IP address conflicts using my routers Network Map tool. There are no conflicts.

The router and printer are both on the latest firmware.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Sorry, no suggestions for using Safari to directly submit the print job and I don't use the "share" option.

I have HP Smart installed on my iPad Pro; with the caveat mentioned in other threads (no font size control), the Smart application serves my needs, including general submissions from browser.

For those reading:

Font size is controlled within the document / application.  Send / Copy your file into Pages (for example), adjust the font size and font type, save, then print.

If I think (or see) anything that might be helpful, I will post back.

Thank you. I also tried installing the HP Smart app. It too can only see the printer for a short time after a reboot. After that, same result. No AirPrint Printers Found.

It is rare - usually everything else breaks first - the wireless radio might fail on the printer.

Assuming your router provides connection logs, you might check there to see if anything "pops-out" as significant.

I understand, too, that security software can interfere, though I don't see that as a factor between simple iOS device and the printer.

My HP Officejet Pro 8630 provides an Ethernet connection.  If you are not yet doing so, and your 8610 supports Ethernet, consider connecting the printer to the router using the Ethernet option.  That will somewhat reduce the chance that the printer is failing to keep the connection.

Check for updates / firmware updates on the router.  In the case of a five year old printer, it is doubtfull there is anything significant going on - it only takes a few minutes to check.  If the router is even older than the printer, it is time to replace that device.

If I think of anything substantive, I'll check back.

There is always the possibility I've missed something - I have less experience with "things that are Apple" than might be the case with another Expert or one our community members.

Good Luck.

After more troubleshooting this past weekend, my problem appears to be related to my Linksys EA7500 router.

First, I connected an older HP OfficeJet Pro 6230 that I had here and configured it for wireless operation. It had previously been used in a wired environment only.  Configured for wireless, it worked for a short time and then could not be seen by IOS devices, same as my 8610. This immediately threw up a red flag for me.

Next, I did a factory reset on my Linksys router and also rebooted my cable modem. I did the basic config of the router so that the same SSID and passwords were in effect. This worked longer than my recenty experiences but after several hours, neither the 8610 nor the 6230 could be found by our IOS devices.

Next, I turned down the Linksys EA7500 router and connected an older EA 2500 that I had used before the 7500. All has now been working for 24+ hours. both printers are findable by all of our IOS devices.

Since the 2500 has much poorer range than the 7500 and is single band only, I've ordered a new Asus router to replace the 2500. Hopefully, there will be no issues with IOS devices finding the printers.

At this point, all indications are a problem with the EA7500, even with factory default settings. Apparently a firmware update came along that caused the problem. It had been set to do automatic updates and is currently on the latest available firmware.

That the router (or its configuration / software) is at fault is no surprise.

I am surprised that a firmware update appears to have broken the connection - not shocked, mind you, just surprised.  Router firmware (in our experience) is usually better than that.  Meh.

Hopefully, you will find a way to more permanently resolve the problem.

Thanks for posting back to let us know what you found.

The new router has now been on line a couple of days. We continue to be able to access the HP printers from IOS devices without issue using this new router.

I'm surprised that the old router suddenly developed a problem because it had always worked fine from IOS devices. It was only recently in the past few months that this issue came up. I tried everything that I could find on the web to no avail. As noted above, a factory reset also did not solve the issue.  Bonjour is factory enabled on that router and frankly, I could find nothing that pointed to a possible problem but the fact of the matter is, that Linksys router no longer worked with my HP printers.  For reference, the new one is an ASUS RT-AC68U. It has been working fine with the the HP printers so far.

A week later now since my last post and all continues to be well. Disappointing that the router of all things was the problem, even with factory default settings. That router was not an antique by any means, and fully supports Bonjour. Very disappointing. The new Asus router has worked fine so far. I am calling this fixed at this time.
