Printer won't work because I keep getting an "Ink Cartridge Problem" message. I replaced the cartridge, cleaned the copper cartridge contacts, powered off and back on printer and still getting error message.

Greetings and Welcome to HP Support Community!
Are you using genuine HP Ink cartridges or refilled ink cartridges?
Did you try to update the printer firmware?
Let's start off by performing a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Remove USB cable, if present.
Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

@Grdhou, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Which ink cartridge has the error?
To identify the defective ink cartridge, insert one cartridge at a time and check if the error persists.
Let us try these steps to resolve this issue:
Reset the printer
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.
Also, perform step 3 mentioned in this document.
Let me know how this goes.

Me too! I can't keep wasting expensive ink cartridges. This happened a couple of days ago with a cartridge that I had been using for a while. Tried a new one - same thing. Have one spare cartridge, but am reluctant to open that for fear of same thing. Message says "indicated cartridge", but there is no indication of whether it is the black one or the coloured. I'm assuming this is a problem with the chip.

Had already taken these steps. However, I have assiduously repeated them. To no avail. I have spent nearly the whole afternoon trying. Carefully cleaning with a damp cotton bud and then going over both areas [cartridge and printer] with a lint-free cloth. And don't say it might be the cotton bud - as that was a last resort. I'm thinking I'm going to have to buy a new printer. However, I should like to get to the bottom of this problem. There has to be a cause, and I'm worried that the same thing will happen with a new printer.

Did you mean the automated help? If so - useless. I typed in the message "Remove and reinstall ..." came back asking "Did this help?". As if ... I really don't know where to turn. Have wasted a day on this and got nowhere. I'm looking for a cause. Have just noticed many others have this problem. The misery and frustration this is causing us - and we're getting nowhere. Is there no one with a remedy? If it was just a new cartridge I would think it's a faulty chip, but this happened on an in-use cartridge and on a new one. I am loathe to try another cartridge and waste that too. The firmware is up-to-date. No physical changes to the printer. Working one minute. Switch back on to print some more - this message appears. Why would I buy another 5540 and be in fear of this happening again? Except I have ink cartridges for it here that cost more than the printer.
