This morning I awoke to find ink leaking from the bottom of my 8500. All the Ink cartridges are clean. When I left the printer last night the display said it was checking the printer, then cleaning the printheads, then aligning the printer and as some of you know this can take quite some time so I left it. It must have run all night doing this. Luckily the printer was on folders to keep the printer from scratching the desk but it soaked through the folders and stained the desk. So I carried the printer into my shop and it dripped all the way. I removed the second paper tray and the bottom was covered with ink and since it has no electronics in it I washed it off. However the main unit bottom is covered in ink. I tilted the printer on its side to wipe the bottom off and more ink dribbled out of the unit. I removed the panel on the right side of the print chamber and it looks like someone poured a bottle of ink into it. There appears to be a non-removable waste ink "bowl" and it obviously filled and overflowed. It is amazing when you see everywhere your hands touch something because they are covered in ink. I just installed a new print head last week and new black and yellow ink cartridges. Now I have to throw all of it away. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to save this printer, other than hosing it off in the back yard?

I contacted HP, someone overseas I assume, and after spending 20 minutes on the phone HP said it is out of warranty and they could sell me a refurbished upgrade. I have dealt with HP in the past and their price on refurbished equipment has never been a value. In my mind a refurbished product should be half the price of a new one. These guys aren't even close. I am scrapping the unit.

Hi
I have had the same problem 2 days ago with my 8500A Plus e printer. Ink leaking from the bottom, more coming out by tilting the printer. In fact it spilt all over my beige carpet, so I was not as lucky!
Before this happened, I had replace my black/yellow printhead and 2 ink cartridges. Not sure what to do with the printer, it is out of warranty, might have to throw it away or give it a go myself before I take it to the bin. Was not expecting this from a HP printer that was not cheap to buy.

I've had the same thing happen. It appears a reservoir inside is overflowing. Is there a way to buy and replace a new reservoir that apparently hold excess ink? The wooden filing cabinet I had the printer on is also now ruined and I will definitely not try to move the printer to create more mess.

Yes the top of my cabinet got permanent stains also from the leaking ink. When I discovered the mess I immediately carried the printer to the shop in an effort to save the oak cabinet. It also dripped onto the carpet, the few spots are still there. It seems after I put new printheads in and new ink cartridges the printer spent the whole night cleaning the new heads... some sort of malfunction which caused the waste ink tray to overflow. Who would design a printer that has an ink tray that cannot be empitied. When I opened the printer up there was ink everywhere and HP told me it was out of production and no parts for it were available so I couldn't have it repaired. It was the best printer I ever had. I replaced it with an Epson eco tank printer and although it is nice it does not hold a candle against the 8500. Except for the price of the ink and printheads the 8500 was a great printer. And it lasted many years. I do not expect the Epson to last as long. HP was able to assist me a little with gift cards and I never asked them to do anything about my oak cabinet or carpet. I got the eco tank printer because it has large ink tanks on the outside of the printer and you just pour ink into the tanks from a bottle. The epson ink is about $12.

Thanks for your reply! That stinks about your cabinet and carpet. I haven't moved the printer yet so I will have to be very careful with my carpet/floors!
So there is no way to remove the spittoon that holds the extra ink? I think I found a refurbished one online but I have no idea how to remove it, and it's so full I know the ink will go everwhere. I hate to go buy a new printer since this one still works fine in every way! What a terrible design though and you would think it would give us a warning when the reservoir/spittoon is getting full. It sure lets us know when the ink cartridges are getting low! Looks like I'll probably be buying a new all in one I guess. Thanks for the tips about the Epson. Very good to know!
