I just received an HP ENVY Photo 7164 for free from a friend. When trying to set up, I receive the following error about needing to update my instant ink subscription.  How can I do this without logging into my friends account?

Hi @LysauMH

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the image. Based on the message shown on the HP ENVY Photo 7164, the printer is still linked to your friend's HP Instant Ink account.

The error: "Cannot print. Connect printer to update HP Instant Ink status." means the printer is locked because it previously used Instant Ink subscription cartridges, which only function when the printer is connected to the HP cloud and enrolled under the original account.

Option 1: Replace Instant Ink Cartridges with Standard Retail Cartridges

The simplest and most reliable solution is:

Remove the Instant Ink cartridges currently in the printer.

Install brand-new standard HP 64 or 64XL ink cartridges (genuine, non-Instant Ink versions).

This allows the printer to work without any subscription.

Option 2: Remove the Printer from the Previous HP Instant Ink Account

Only the original owner (your friend) can do this. If they are available, you could ask them to:

Sign in to their HP Instant Ink account:
https://instantink.hpconnected.com

Go to My Account > My Printers

Select the HP ENVY Photo 7164

Choose Remove Printer

Then cancel the Instant Ink subscription if not already done

Once the printer is removed, you will be able to set it up under your own account or simply use standard cartridges.

If your friend is unable or unwilling to log in, continue with Option 1.

Optional: Restore Factory Defaults

Resetting the printer will not remove the Instant Ink lock, but it may help with general setup:

On the printer’s control panel:

Go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults

After the reset, reconnect to Wi-Fi and install standard cartridges

This error will remain as long as Instant Ink cartridges are installed and the printer is not connected to the original account.

You do not need to enroll in Instant Ink again to use the printer. Just use standard retail cartridges.

Let me know if you would like help identifying your current cartridges or choosing the right replacements.
