HP Officejet Pro 8610

Today, I printed a few sheets this morning with no problem. Then one sheet later in the day came out very streaky with extra black ink everywhere. I tried to reprint, but the screen had an error, "The printhead appears to be missing, not detected, or incorrectly installed." I have tried several troubleshooting suggestions posted elsewhere, but have not yet unscrewed and cleaned the entire printhead. IF I am unsuccessful in fixing the printhead, we will most likely just purchase a new printer, since this one is 5yrs old (a new printhead costs more than we originally paid for the printer). However, if we do choose to replace the printer with a new HP model, will I lose the rollover pages I have accumulated on HP Instant Ink or will those be useable with the new replacement printer?

Welcome to the HP support community

I understand that you are getting a printhead error, I am glad to assist you.

Follow these steps to fix the issue.

Reseat the printhead up to three times

  1. Open the door to access to the ink cartridges.

  2. Wait until the carriage stops moving before you continue.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer.

       WARNING:

You must disconnect the power cord before reaching inside the printer.

  4. Lift the carriage latch, slightly lift the printhead, lower the printhead back into the carriage, wiggle the printhead left and right, and then lower the carriage latch to lock the printhead into place.

  5. Close the ink cartridge access door.

  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then check the control panel for the error message.

  7. Sometimes error messages persist after inserting the printhead. If the error message persists, repeat the steps to reseat the printhead up to three times.

I’ve been having print quality issues for months (after following all the troubleshooting tips) and want to replace my printer. This answer doesn’t address the question-“ do rollover pages carry over to new replacement printer?”

@lueloff, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

Yes, the rollover pages will be transferred to the replacement printer provided you select 'replacement' while enrolling the new printer in Instant Ink.

Follow these steps to keep your account history, rollover pages, and free trial months:

  1. Make sure the new printer is HP Instant Ink compatible. If you plan to purchase one, look for the HP Instant Ink logo on the box. For warranty replacements, you will automatically be sent a compatible printer.
  2. Do not cancel your current Instant Ink plan.
  3. Once you have the new printer, log in to your account at hpinstantink.com and click Enroll/Replace Printer.
  4. Then follow the steps to complete enrollment of your new printer.

Important information about cartridges:

  • A new set of Instant Ink cartridges will either be included with your printer or you will receive a shipment within 10 business days of replacing the printer.
  • If compatible, you can also install any unused Instant Ink cartridges you may have on hand. If not compatible, please send any unused cartridges back in the included recycle bag.
  • Any used cartridges you may have will not work in the new printer, so please send them back for recycling.

Thank you for choosing HP Instant Ink and enjoy your new printer!
