HP Smart can scan but cannot print. It has an ! on the picture of the Deskjet 2600 series and says it can't find the printer. However HP's online tool  did find the printer and could print using it, as can MS Word. Error symbol on printer is flashing but not one shown in HPs' list of symbols for this printer. It's just below the signal strength indicator and look like an envelope with an ink drop to the right.   Orange light next to the i symbol is lit.

 

Any ideas? The printer is on the same wifi network as the new PC

That is the Instant Ink icon you are referring to. Is the printer enrolled in Instant Ink?

Are you using Instant Ink cartridges in the printer?

If yes, the printer has to be connected to the internet for you to be able to print.

 

Restart the wireless router and the printer.

Log in to your Instant Ink account and check for any notifications.

Thank you. I did manage to speak to HP eventually on the basis that I am a subscriber for instant ink (even though printer is out of warranty). And essentially, yes, turning the router on and off (mixed with removing duplicate entries for the printer on the control panel, which had somehow appeared) did fix it. However the problem reoccurred later and I had to fix again by turning the router on and off. So I'm hoping it doesn't happen again too often but at least I have a way to manage it.
