A teacher has this printer in her room.   Randomly, when she sends a print job to this printer, the printer will not print but shows an error code "CD 98140B" on the screen.   In order to clear the code, you have to restart the printer.   This printer has an event log showing other error codes as well.  The FW is up to date.

This printer was set up brand new out of the box several months ago.  Is there a bug with the firmware or something else?

Hi @pfisher,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP LaserJet 3101 is showing a “CD 98140B” error code randomly when printing, even though the firmware is up to date. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Power cycle the printer
– Turn off the printer, unplug it from the wall for 30–60 seconds, then plug it back in and power it on.
– This clears temporary errors in the printer’s memory and can sometimes resolve random error codes.

Check the network connection
– If printing over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, ensure the connection is stable. Intermittent network issues can trigger error codes during print jobs.
– Try sending a print job directly via USB if possible, to rule out network-related causes.

Inspect installed cartridges
– Remove and reseat all toner cartridges.
– Make sure they are genuine HP cartridges and properly seated. Faulty or poorly installed cartridges can generate error codes.

Check the printer event log
– Look at the event log to see if there is a pattern to when the error occurs (e.g., after certain jobs, after heavy usage, or specific file types).
– This can help narrow down whether it’s a hardware, firmware, or job-related issue.

Reset the printer to factory defaults
– From the printer menu, perform a factory reset to clear potential configuration corruption.
– After resetting, reconnect the printer to the network and test with a few print jobs.

Monitor for firmware updates or known issues
– Sometimes random error codes are caused by firmware bugs. Check HP’s support site periodically for updated firmware or release notes that address error codes.

I hope this helps.
