HP ENVY 15 PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After I updated my father's PC (also in the ENVY line) I could no longer print to the Laser Jet Pro 400 Color M451dn printer.

I uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, rebooted etc.  The device appears as an optical reader.

I decided to narrow down the issue, so I bought my laptop (HP ENVY 15 PC Notebook).  It too see the Laser Jet printer as an optical device.  (Note: My windows is up-to-date with the 1909 release of Windows 10.)

I found a similar problem listed (optical instead of printer) but the solution included buttons not available on the Laser Jet pro 400.

I would be grateful to a solution that is specific to the Laser Jet 400 color M451dn.

Update the firmware and that function should be disabled.  The function did not work as expected when released and they disabled it in a future firmware update.

I tried the idea of updating the firmware.

Note that the printer is attached by a USB cable (not on a network).

When using the method for a printer attached by a USB cable, the download asks what printer to update.  Unfortunately, the only printers that it lists are the ones already installed.  So I seem to have a circular problem.  How do I get the firmware to the printer if the PC doesn't know the printer is connected?

Also note that I tried to update the driver, and it completed the software download until reaching 99% and then finally timed out.
