I have an old LaserJet 1022 that is suddnely doing something weird. Anytime I try to print something, it no longer just prints but the action light on the printer flashes orange and I have push the green-diamond button on the printer for it to print. I have to do this with each print request, even if requesting multiple copies of the same document. I have no idea how this happened. I didn't knowingly make any changes to the setup. I also checked all the settings I know to check and they all look correct. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. 😊

Hi @GTifeld
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP LaserJet 1022 is in a manual feed mode, where the printer is waiting for a manual confirmation to print each job. This could be caused by a setting that got changed accidentally, or it could be due to a driver or software issue.
Here are a few troubleshooting steps to help resolve this problem:
1. Check for "Manual Feed" Mode in Printer Settings
The printer might be set to manual feed mode, meaning it’s expecting you to load the paper manually. Here’s how to check and adjust this:
- On the Printer’s Control Panel:
- Make sure the paper is loaded in the paper tray.
- Check if the manual feed light is on or flashing.
- On Your Computer (Printer Settings):
- Open the Printer Properties on your computer (this can be done from the Control Panel on Windows or the Print dialog on macOS).
- Look for a setting related to paper source or manual feed.
- Ensure the paper source is set to Auto or Tray 1 instead of Manual Feed.
2. Reset the Printer
- Power Cycle: Turn off the printer and unplug it for about 60 seconds. Plug it back in and power it on. This can help reset any temporary issues or errors.
- Factory Reset: If power cycling doesn’t resolve the issue, you can try a factory reset. Unfortunately, the LaserJet 1022 doesn't have an easily accessible factory reset option, but resetting your printer settings through the driver can sometimes achieve the same result.
3. Check the Printer Queue for Stuck Jobs
- Sometimes a stuck print job can cause unusual behavior.
- On your computer, open the Printer Queue and check if there are any pending jobs. If there are, cancel them and try printing again.
- To check:
- On Windows, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Right-click on the LaserJet 1022 > See what's printing.
- On macOS, go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Select the LaserJet 1022 > Open Print Queue.
4. Reinstall the Printer Driver
A corrupted or outdated driver could also cause issues like this. Reinstalling the printer driver might help:
- Uninstall the Printer from your computer and remove it from your list of devices.
- Download the Latest Driver from HP's official support site for the LaserJet 1022.
- Reinstall the printer by following the installation instructions.
5. Check for Firmware Updates
Although the LaserJet 1022 is an older model, it’s still worth checking if any firmware updates are available on HP’s support website. Sometimes, updating the firmware can fix bugs or glitches.
I hope this helps.

Hello and thank you for your response.
I tried each and every step you outlined, but unfortunately none of them worked. The last thing I treid was removing/uninstalling the printer and reinstalling from scratch, but still no change. Given the printer's age, I'm not sure it's worth spending much more time & energy on this. I can live with the problem, but if you have any other suggestions, I'm open to hearing them. Thank you once again. 😊
