Pull the power cord, wait ten seconds and then plug back in.  I have been told if the initial count goes beyond 600 the device is not going to come to ready. If the device still does not come to ready, then either the firmware is corrupted the harddrive or EMMC (depending on configuration) has failed. You can try reinstalling the firmware from the preboot menu. The firmware readme file available from support.hp.com provides the instructions. You will want to peform a partial clean which is one of the options you will see under the Preboot>administration menu. When you select partial clean, nothing will appear to happen but when restarted, the printer format the operating partition and reinstall the firmware from a backup partition. You lose any settings when this happens but not a big deal on a single function device like this.

I pulled the plug as suggested, waited some time, and finally plugged the printer back in.  This time it started normally.

I suspect this printer has buggy code due to other issues I face with it.  Support claims this cannot be; otherwise, others would be reporting issues.

If I continue to experience issues with this, I will take it to Micro Center for warranty repair.
