LaserJet M1212nf:  stuck on "initializing...." screen when the printer is turned on.  Nothing prints, copies, etc.

I have tried numerous approaches involving restarts, resets, hard resets (removing power cord, etc.), product resets ("Permanent storage init.") as detailed in these forums. Nothing worked.

What other options do I have to restore this device?  Are there any software or hardware resolutions?

Firmware fix? NVRAM reset? I don't know how to proceed, please help!

Thanks!

Hi @Mengjiin,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When your HP LaserJet M1212nf is stuck on the "initializing...." screen and traditional methods like restarts, resets, and power cycling don't seem to resolve the issue, you can try the following steps.

  1. Firmware Update:

    • Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer model on the HP support website.
    • If an update is available, follow the instructions provided to update the firmware. Firmware updates can sometimes resolve software-related issues.
  2. NVRAM Reset:

    • NVRAM (Non-Volatile Random Access Memory) stores configuration information for the printer. Performing an NVRAM reset may help resolve the issue. Here are the general steps:
      • Turn off the printer.
      • Turn the printer on and wait for it to initialize.
      • When the printer starts initializing, press and hold the "Cancel" button until all LEDs flash.
  3. Cold Reset:

    • A cold reset is similar to an NVRAM reset and can be done to restore the printer to its default settings. Please note that this will erase network settings and other custom configurations.
      • Turn off the printer.
      • Turn the printer on and wait for it to initialize.
      • When the printer starts initializing, press and hold the "Go" button until all LEDs flash.
  4. Check for Hardware Issues:

    • Ensure that there are no physical obstructions or damaged components inside the printer.
    • Check for any loose connections or cables.
    • If possible, try connecting the printer to a different power outlet to rule out power-related issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Alden4,

Thanks for your reply.

> When the printer starts initializing, press and hold the "Cancel" button until all LEDs flash.

There is no button with Cancel on it, but I tried X button and it didn't work.

> When the printer starts initializing, press and hold the "Go" button until all LEDs flash.

There is no button with Go on it, I tried OK button and it didn't work.

This problem happened whenIchanged the printer from using USB cable to being a network printer.

Isuspect there is a firmware corruption.

Since the printer is stuck, Icannot use network to update the firmware, and will have to use USB to update the firmware. Could you provide the instructions how to update the firmware with USB?

Thanks!
