Came back into my home office this morning and printer power was off.  Used it yesterday and fine.  Have trouble shooted the problem with plugging into new wall outlet, different power surge protector, removing power cord, pausing, re-plugging in, etc. etc. and nothing.  Did it just die overnight for some odd reason?  Power surge protector it was plugged into has other power items and all those are fine.

No weather storms or any other issues with other items in my office.

Thank you.

laser printers should never be plugged into a standard surge protector or multi outlet strip as they can restrict current flow to the printer resulting in erratic performance and print quality. It sounds like you have covered the bases. Do you get any activity at all, even briefly when you first apply power?  If not a power supply issue is a likely culprit. Could be as simple as a blown fuse, but I am in no position to assess your technical ability to safely disassemble a device like this.

Interesting your comment about the surge protector or power strip.  From working in technology, we have always been advised to plug our equipment, including printers, NOT directly to the power outlet, but use an electronics surge protector strip  (not some standard power strip.)  That is what I have.  It is not the issue here.

To answer your question, no power at all, even briefly.  Still no power, even when tried the next day, plugging/unplugging from power, removing the power cord and re-plugging the power cord into the 281.

Went and bought a new LJ HP MFP CDW.  Thought I'd try the new printer power cord in the 281 before I swapped out my printer.  And it WORKED!  And then I plugged the 281's original cord into the 281 and it worked.  And it has worked since, for a couple days now.  Waited to test it for a few days, before replying here.

I can't have a printer go down on me, for my workflow.  I've used HP scan/print/fax MF B&W  and color LJ's in my home office since 1998.  Usually each lasts 5-10 years before I decide to replace them, to update for features, speed.  I used to have two printers, one solely B&W, other color, but with HP hardware reliability, I went down to only 1 machine when the MFP color LJ had speed I could live with.  However, in trouble-shooting this 281 power issue, before posting here, I have seen the other posts where the 281 has been unreliable with power for others.  So I am now concerned with some 281 lemons among us.

What is your guess as to the power problem that locked up this 281?  If it was a fuse, it wouldn't have restarted with a new cord, and then continued to work with the old cord.  Seems, like somehow it needed a cold, hard re-boot, in Windows terms.  Used the same electronics surge protector as I had before, etc., etc.

I ask because I feel I need to return the 281 so as to not have this happen at some un-opportune work time in the future.

Thank you
