Had this error 2.5 years ago, replaced formatter board, fixed the issue. The same error reoccurred last week; I had to turn the printer on and off a number of times during the day just to print some documents.

Had a look at the formatter board I had removed - it has a CR1632 button battery, for what I assume is a clock function. But the battery is spot-welded in, and from a look at the PC board, it's probably the only component not wave soldered due to heat concerns. Picked up an appropriate PC-mount battery holder for a buck and a half, jury-rigged it to the PC board holes with wires, replaced with new battery, put back in printer. Had to reset various time and date functions via control panel, but now printer works perfectly, again.

I had just guessed that the battery was a part prone to a finite life, and decided to see what would happen if I tried to replace it. So, of you're handy with a soldering iron, it's a simple fix that doesn't take very long. Really just a matter of being practical about keeping older tech stuff going; after all, a refurbished formatter board is only about $15 on eBay. Hope this helps someone!

I am a little surprised the battery fixed the issue. 90% of 49 errors are caused by corrupt print jobs or out of date firmware that results in printer not being able to interpret print data from newer applications properly.  I have worked with plenty of devices with failed date and time batteries and never had them cause 49's. Something to keep in mind. Thanks for posting.
