Hello,
I bought an MFP M183fw a few days ago, and connected that via USB to a PC running on a german Windows 7 Home 64 bit.
Despite various attempts to install the printer properly, it is only recognized as a scanner, i.e. it appears in the "device" section and not in the "printer and fax" section in the system control.
What I have tried so far:
I have donwloaded various official software packages as exe files for the printer and my operating system (files LJM182-M185_UWWL_4_1_Basicx64_44.6.2709, LJM178-M181_UWWL_4_1_Basicx64_44.7.2712 and upd-pcl6-x64-7.0.0.24832) and tried to run those, but my new device was only recognized as a scanner. I then deleted my old printer, but it would regularly reappear after reboot. In addition, though the M183fw also appeared as a printer, the symbol was grayed out, and no hardware or printer connection was shown in the "properties" dialog. Assuming that I had messed up my system, I then went through the registry and deleted every entry that I could find having the name of my old printer and the name of M183fw in it. That finally led to a disappearance of all printer entries.
I then decided to go the easy way, and let windows do the installation for me. When I connected the printer to the PC via the USB cable, and started the printer, windows did access windows update and apparentlys downloaded several drivers. I did not vey carefully watch what windows downloaded excatly, but got the impression that windows knew what it was doing.
However, once again, the M183fw was only recognized as a scanner.
I then tried to install the device manully, but stopped during the process, since windows did not show me a suitable driver.
What is going on here? How can I use the complete functionality of the M183fw?
If that is of any help: in the device manager, I see some HP related entries below the entry "USB controller", namely:
HP ColorLaserJet MFP M182-M185 (SOPA Fax), HP ColorLaserJet MFP M182-M185(IPP WinUSB, HP ColorLaserJet MFP M182-M185(REST),HP ColorLaserJet MFP M182-M185(REST_WinUSB and HP LJ M182M185 (UNUSEDSCANSTUB).

Hello,
some news, but no good ones.
Since the installation by windows 7 did not work, I gave the basic installation tool (LJM182-M185_UWWL_4_1_Basicx64_44.6.2709.EXE) another try.
Result: During the installation, I come to a point where I need to seelct the connection type. When I select "USB", I am asked to connect printer and PC, but the existing connection is not recognized, and the only option that I have is to select "connect later" and skip.
I also tried to connect via WiFi, but during the instsllation I am asked to connect printer and PC by USB, and again, the USB connection is not recognized.
I have no idea how to proceed. If the printer had a problem with the USB port, or if the USB cable was broken, I think that the installation of the scanner part should not have worked as well, but it did, and the scanner is working.I can also xerox.
Is there anything I need to do to "activate" the printer functionality?

Hello,
connecting the printer to a Windows 10 Tablet via WiFi worked immediately.
So I assume that for a reason that I have not understood yet, connecting the printer to a WIndows 7 system w/o WiFi does not work.
Has anyone managed to successfully print from WIndows 7 via USB?

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Let's try to do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:
Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'
6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo
14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
15.) Restart the computer.
Once done, please download and install the software from here:

If the issue persists, I would suggest you try the Windows built-in drivers. Follow the steps below:
• Go to Control Panel - Devices and Printers - Click on "Add printer" and follow the on-screen instructions.
• When the page prompts for the drivers, select "Windows update". The driver list will be updated.
• Click HP, Hewlett Packard, or Hewlett-Packard in the Manufacturer pane, and then click the name of your printer in the Printers pane.
Refer to this document HP Printers - Installing and Using the Windows Built-in Print Driver for help.

Betty0610, thank you for your supprt.
I followed the steps suggested by you to clean my system from residual parts of previoús installations, and then used the installation package LJM182-M185_UWWL_4_1_Basicx64_44.6.2709.exe. I skipped the fax installation, then provided the requested informations regarding home or office use, zip code, etc., and then, the program confirmed the complete installation.
However, in the device and printer dialog, I only saw an entry for a fax, and none for a printer. As expected, printing to the fax did not work.
I then tried to switch to the built-in drivers, and select from several hundreds of printers the entry "HP ColorLaserJet MFP,M182-M185 PCL 6 (V3)". That seemed close enopugh to my device. When clicking on "finish", i got an error dialog saying “Printer could not be installed” (Error 0xe06d7363).
I will give it a final try by starting with the windows drivers after repeating the "cleaning steps".
At least, I can print from my windows 10 Tablet. Though it is not connected to the printer via WiFi (as I had written yesterday) , but by USB, printing works well.

Let's create a TCP IP port
1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)
2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, right-click the printer and left-click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.
3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.
4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.
This video resource will show you how to do it:
