The display screen on my M553 works when I first power up the printer, but fades away at about "Initializing 12" time. If I turn the printer off and let it cool it comes back the same way the next power-up.
Do I need to replace the display device?

You need to troubleshoot a few steps as it could be a power issue. First make sure that you are plugged in directly to the wall not into a surge proctor. Try a different power cord.
Next, turn the printer on and wait five minutes, then press the engine test button on the back of the printer, you must have paper in tray 2 for the engine test to work. If the engine test works, we know that the power supply is ok and there are only two items that can cause this issue, the formatter or the screen itself. Does the printer still respond and print jobs even though the display is blank? If so then most likely the display is bad. If it does not then it could be the formatter (the board your usb or network cable plugs into) and the only way to confirm that is to remove the formatter and see if the display works.
There have also been isolated cases of a bad fuser causing a short so you can power off the printer, remove the fuser and power the printer on without the fuser installed and see if the display works.
There is also a screen test button on the back of the display that you can press using a blunt object like a paper clip. Each press will advance through a display test.
Picture below shows location of engine test button and fuser location behind the left door.
