HP MPF M140we laser jet printer. Yellow exclamation point blinks.  Error code 01.  Paper is loaded, no jam, new cartridge installed, unplugged and plugged back in. Exclamation point still blinks and the printer won't print.

Hi @Cindy1128

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

On the HP LaserJet MFP M140we, a blinking yellow exclamation point with Error Code 01 usually indicates a paper feed or tray detection issue, even if paper is loaded and no jam is visible. It can also be triggered by incorrect cartridge seating or a firmware/connection problem.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

1. Paper & Tray Check

  • Remove all paper, fan it to prevent sheets sticking, and reload.
  • Ensure paper guides are snug against the stack (not too tight).
  • Try a different stack of plain A4/Letter paper to rule out detection errors.

2. Cartridge Reseat

  • Open the front cover, remove the toner cartridge, and reinstall it firmly.
  • Check for protective tape or packaging left on the cartridge.
  • If possible, test with another genuine HP cartridge.

3. Hard Reset

  • Power off the printer.
  • Disconnect power for 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect and power on while holding the Cancel (X) button for 5–10 seconds to force a reset.

4. Firmware Update

  • Connect the printer via USB or Wi-Fi.
  • Go to HP Software & Drivers and check for the latest firmware for the M140we.
  • Install updates to clear persistent error codes.

5. Connection & HP+ Setup

  • If using HP Smart app, ensure the printer is properly registered.
  • Some users report Error 01 when Instant Ink/HP+ setup isn’t completed. Open HP Smart and finish setup steps.
