Welcome to the HP Support Community
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.
To assist better:
- Are you using genuine HP inks?
- Was there any update on the printer prior to the issue?
While you respond to that, let's perform a power drain:
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Remove USB cable, if present.
- Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
- Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
- Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle
Update the printer firmware
- Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your product
- Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.
Note: You may refill your cartridges or use remanufactured cartridges, but you may run into problems. HP will not guarantee the functionality of those ink cartridges.
There are many cartridges in the market which is refilled and sometimes the chip is not configured to work with the printer. You need to contact the cartridge manufacturer and find out why it's not working. Try a different cartridge supplier and check if that works.

Hi-
On a Mac and I'm having the same issue with my MFP M281fdw printer.
I have HP cartridges that I've been using (bought in a two-pack from Staples) and the printer says the chips are non-HP. The driver has been updated and the advice given for power cord was done.
No luck.
How do I override that to get it to print? They are HP cartridges!

While you respond to that, Let's perform a power drain:
